This book features over 320 photographs of captured and destroyed Soviet aircraft from the Eastern Front in World War Two - most of them having never been published before. All of the captured aircraft were tested at Rechlin air base in Germany where most of the photographs were taken in situ, during and after the Operation Barbarossa - the attempted Nazi invasion of Russia. Maps and charts show the German advances, and both sides' bases, plus losses during the campaign. 19 colour profiles

Reviewed by Ray Mehlberger This is the latest book to come to us from the editor of Mushroom Model Magazine (by the way, an excellent little publication). It is in the usual B5 size of 9 3/8" by 6 3/8" format with a soft cover. Like the previous books that I have reviewed by this publisher, this book was originally published in the Polish language. It is now in English. A loose sheet, that was included inside the book, said that there are over 320 B & W photos in the book. I took actual count and it is 341. There are also eight pages of color profiles (20) of various types of aircraft that the Soviets were flying at the time of the Barbarosa invasion. One, lonely, war-time color photo adorns the back cover of the book. Orders of battle, during the German attack, and – published for the first time ever – a table of all the Soviet aircraft captured during the initial phase of the war. Two maps of the German advances, German bases and Soviet Military Districts and bases. Details of Soviet and German losses during the first weeks of the Barbarosa Operation. The book has a glossary of acronyms, and a bibliography. This book is virtual picture album. 99% of it is photos with captions underneath. The photos mainly show wrecked Soviet aircraft, that were destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the attack. It is vividly shown how badly the Germans mauled the Soviet air arm, and...to that end the book is interesting. From a modeling standpoint the color profiles are good to get paint schemes from. The photos, however, are rather small...so hard to make much detail from. Highly recommended for students of this battle.

Reviewed by Brett Green The latest Mushroom Model Magazine Special focuses on the carnage left behind after the initial campaigns on the Russian Front by the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht. A cross-section of the 20,000 Soviet aircraft destroyed in the first months of Operation Barbarossa are featured in this new book. The book comprises 144 pages in 9.5" x 6.5" format, with soft covers and including an eight pages colour profile section. Introductory text is brief. A selected bibliography is followed by a Glossary of Terms for Soviet aircraft and organisation, eight pages of background text and a few interesting tables describing aircraft production by type, deployment by district, Soviet Order of Battle as at the German invasion, Soviet aircraft captured and maps of the German advance. The main section of the book commences on Page 23. Over 150 pages of captioned pictures of captured, damaged and destroyed aircraft lays out a staggering vista of the destruction over these first months of Operation Barbarossa. This section is absolutely packed with images. Each page displays two, three or four photos. Due to the small-format of the book, some of these pictures are a little small to really show off the detail that undoubtedly exists in the original photographs. All photos are captioned with information about location and date, where this is available. There is minimal reference to colours applied to the aircraft in the captions. Apart from the sheer bulk of pictures, the greatest strength of this book is its logical organisation by aircraft type. Twenty-one aircraft types are depicted with between one and nineteen pages devoted to each. The bulk of coverage is the early fighter types - I-152, I-16 and MiG-3 - with strong coverage of bombers too. I particularly like one of the black and green disruptive schemes on a damaged Pe-2. The eight page colour profile section includes nineteen paintings of fighters, trainers and bombers in a good variety of schemes. This book provides a feast of photos and information to modellers and students of VVS aircraft. Recommended
